Hand-Held, Touch-Screen Computers
We have been using hand-held, touch-screen computers for clinic and event-based research for nearly 20 years. We currently own a large
number of iPad computers that we have successfully used for many projects since the iPads were first introduced in April 2010. Our process
has numerous advantages over pencil and paper as well as over other forms of computerized data collection.
iPADS FOR DATA CAPTURE...
• iPads are light and easy to use. People with no computer experience can quickly get up to speed. Virtually everyone finds them enjoyable.
• Battery life is about 10 hours, even under constant use. That means the battery will not go dead at any point during the project; the
computers just get recharged at night.
• Screen brightness can be easily adjusted for both indoor and outdoor use.
• Audio comments can be captured directly into the iPad and saved as a series of MP3 files.
• The questionnaire used on the iPads is identical to an online survey. That means clients can walk through the survey and make changes
from the comfort of their own desk before ever being on site. There are no last-minute surprises regarding survey design. The survey can
be completely finished ahead of time, with only secure photos, vehicle pricing or other last-minute decisions being input on-site.
• Because the survey is networked, clients can monitor results in real time. Frequency distributions can also be provided at any point.
• Computerized surveys have many advantages over paper & pencil surveys, and our iPad data collection process is no exception. We can
easily integrate choice-based or adaptive conjoint designs, MaxDiff exercises, response randomization, randomized vehicle evaluations,
complex skip patterns, previous answer recall, integration of high resolution images, customized text and answer categories based on
previous question responses and much more. We can even use complex logic algorithms to determine whether a given respondent qualifies
for invite-back focus groups or not based on information collected during the clinic.
